SIRTF Profiles: Johnnie N. Higgins
IPAC/SSC Library Staff
I was born in Pasadena, California and had the wonderful opportunity of growing up and attending schools in the Pasadena Unified School District. As a child I enjoyed sports very much, including softball, track, and basketball. My religious beliefs and living by Bible principles has helped me to remain happily married for 27 years and has instilled in me the ability to be a capable wife. I have had the privilege of knowing my husband since kindergarten. We are the parents of 7 children, and 6 grandchildren. My family is a very vital part of my life.
I am very adventurous, and love outdoor activities, which include boating, skiing, and camping. I am very friendly, and absolutely love talking and being with people, sharing thoughts and ideas, and above all I strive to be a very conscientious person who loves working at Caltech.
Before coming to Caltech, I worked at Lockheed Aeronautical in Burbank, California for 13 years as an Administrative Assistant in Human Resources in the Medical department. I also worked in Purchasing, Product Support, Transportation, and Scheduling. Previously, I was employed at Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District as a Bus Driver Assistant, under the Director of Transportation Department. I always wanted to come to Caltech after leaving Lockheed, but circumstances deterred me to a later date, but finally... I did find my way to Caltech!
I have now worked as a Department Assistant in IPAC, for approximately 3 years. In the IPAC department, my areas of responsibilities are inventory, monitoring equipment, preparing authorizations for off-site of equipment, and ensuring that all paperwork is completed for document review. Other duties that I am responsible for are ordering of books, stationery supplies for each project and expediting services (e.g. Fed Ex), maintaining the equipment database, along with the distribution of incoming and outgoing mail, as well as overseeing the IPAC library.
During the past 3 years that I have worked at Caltech, it has not just been a "Job," but most definitely a pleasure and a fantastic opportunity to be a member of the Caltech family in the IPAC department, and most importantly, to focus on our contribution in future space adventures and odysseys, as we impact modern technology.
